Silk exports in H1 posts a remarkable growth

In the first half of this year, silk export from China fetched US $4.455 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 13.69 percent. Of this, real silk commodity exports earned $1.684 billion, augmenting by 2.31 percent over the same period last year while synthetic silk exports touched $2.77 billion, posting a growth of 21.93 percent.

In the month of June alone, silk exports reached $817 million, posting a rise of 13.6 percent. Of this, real silk merchandise exports fetched $287 million, a decline of 1.28 percent while synthetic silk exports marked $530 million, reflecting a growth of 23.69 percent.

Export of various silk categories settled at 13,600 tons worth $327 million registering a surge of 15.4 and 15.42 percent respectively with average unit price amounting to $24.03 per kilogram, a marginal increase of 0.002 percent compared to the previous year.

Silk satin exports marked 3.396 billion meters, worth $3.163 billion, up by 12.2 and 20.83 percent, in terms of volume and value respectively, compared to the year before. Even for this, the average unit price was $0.93 per meter, an increase of 7.69 percent from the same time last year.

Synthetic silk fabric exports recorded 3.274 billion meters, worth of US $2.77 billion, average unit price was $0.85 per meter, representing a year-on-year growth of 12.12 percent, 21.92 percent and 8.76 percent, respectively. Besides, export of synthetic silk satin accounted for 87.59 percent of total silk satin exports.

On the other hand, real silk satin exports registered at 122 million meters valuing $392 million, an increase of 14.47 percent and 13.6 percent respectively with the average unit price settling at $3.22 per meter, down 0.76 percent from the same time last year.

However, export of manufactured silk products brought in $965 million, down 5.18 percent from the same period last year. Of the total, silk garment exports amounted to 62.46 million sets, worth $750 million and representing a year-on-year decline of 15.43 percent and 4.56 percent respectively. On the whole, silk apparel exports accounted for 77.79 percent of the total manufactured silk product exports.

United States, UAE, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Pakistan and Brazil were some of the major export markets for Chinese silk products.

Except for US and Hong Kong, all the major markets reflected a growth in varying degrees. While exports to Brazil realized the largest growth which went as high as 53.18 percent, exports to US suffered the greatest decline of about 13.21 percent.

Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Guangdong, and Shandong are the top five provinces and cities of China to have made the largest contribution in export of silk products.
