Tapering of demand in PTA to create situation of surplus

At present, China is the world's largest Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) producer and consumer. The provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Fujian and Guangdong have rapidly expanded production capacities of this vital raw material.
Domestic PTA production capacity in 2004 was only 4,835,000 tons, but after the explosive growth post 2004, PTA production capacity is expected to reach 16.66 million tons in 2009.
Due to the current economic slowdown, at home and abroad, the demand from downstream sectors had tapered due to which there are fears of a surplus production capacity of PTA.
