Speaking at a buyer-seller meet, organised by the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC), the Additional Development Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Mr Singh said that the handloom sector in the country should have a holistic development.
He said, this sector which provided direct and indirect employment to over 6.5 million people should have sustainable employment and it was the richest aspect and vibrant aspect of Indian culture, but faced competition from other segments.
NHDC supplies around 10-15 percent of the yarn consumed by the handloom sector in the country and purchases yarn from around 450 mills in the country, the rates of which were put up on the website of the organization.
As suppliers, the yarn manufacturers voiced their concerns by saying that, price fluctuations was a matter of concern and the yarn prices should be fixed on a fortnightly basis and it should also be based on quality parameters of the yarn.
