For the fourth year running, merino fleece grown by a couple of South Canterbury has been judged as New Zealand's best merino fleece. The couple Barrie and Yvonne Payne won the 'Loro Piana Record Bale Award'.
The South Canterbury couple has won this award for the highest price paid for the single bale of super-fine graded wool last year. They have more than 3000 merino sheep on their farm of 177 hectares in Maungati, South Canterbury.
The Paynes had started farming perendales about 38 years ago and switched to merinos 20 years before and have produced New Zealand's finest wool.
