Canton textile & apparel fair under intense pressure

The Vice-President of China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles, Mr. Wang Yu says that textile and apparel trade volume in the current Canton Fair will certainly drop.
Textile and apparel trade volume in last session decreased by 31 percent from the previous session, and represented a year-on-year decline of 39 percent and the drop in the current session is expected to remain the same.
Since overall business environment has been poor in the last few months, coupled with factors such as H1N1 Type A influenza, the number of visitors and actual orders received face a very difficult situation.
China's apparel exports rebounded in March to touch US $7.43 billion, representing an increase of 9.9 percent year-on-year. However, clothing exporters continue to face strong pressure.
According to the statistics from China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles, China had more than 50,000 textile and garment exporters in 2008, but the figure fell to just over 40,000 in the first quarter of this year.
The industry says that textile and garment exports figures of March indicate improvement, but exports in April and May are difficult to estimate and longer-term data is needed to determine export trends.
At present, buyers from Europe and the United States continue to undermine China's competitiveness of textile exports under the excuse of environmental factors and impacted by the financial crisis, credit risk of the U.S. market is also increasing, therefore, China's clothing export enterprises still have to wait for a real warmer time.
