Polyester is considered as a most important synthetic fibre due to its strength and esthetic appeal. It forms a major constituent among the synthetic fiber industry.
Due to its crystalline, hydrophobic, and devoid nature, it is difficult to introduce reactive phosphorus into the fibre structure through chemical reactions.
FR chemicals have to be incorporated in polyester to achieve self extinguishing behavior. Despite the fact that Flame Retardant chemicals are dangerous, it is considered ecological to induce some amount of flame retardant substance in the fibre structure of polyester.
Graft co-polymerization of nitrogenous vinyl monomers can be carried out on the fiber followed by its reaction with phosphorus chemicals, to incorporate reactive phosphorus in the grafted substrate.
Small amount of the FR chemical is also used to impart high fire resistance to polyester fibres. Acrylamide-grafted-phosphorylated (AM-g-P) PET fibers containing just 0.189% phosphorus on-weight-of-fiber (owf) provides self inducing characters to poly fibres.
