Trade bodies connected to the textile sector, more so from the Southern part of India which house most of the cotton consuming mills in the country have demanded a streamlining of roles of the two main state owned cotton procurement agencies.
They have demanded that the roles of Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) and NAFED be restructured with regards to procurement and sales of cotton to ensure that, benefits accrue to farmers and textile mills and not middlemen like the cotton traders.
The Southern India Mills' Association (SIMA) and South India Small Spinner Association have requested the new textile minister, Mr Maran to revamp MSP of cotton on a scientific basis, which would take care of the interests of farmers as well as the mills.
The bulk sales scheme which was initiated by both the state owned entities they alleged, had only benefited the cotton traders and not the mills, which were the original expected beneficiaries and also demanded a withdrawal of 5 percent export duty drawback scheme on cotton.
