The textile industry in Parsa, which once used to have 100 textile factories, is now having just 25 factories in operation, as it is in crisis due to labour unrest, energy crisis and ambiguous government policies.
During last decade, the closure of textile industries has increased rapidly, when several large factories such as Hetauda, Annapurna, Ashok and Himgunga witnessed closure. This closure of textile industries has left around 50,000 employees without job.
Nepali textile companies used to export their products to overseas countries, during their peak period. But now the crisis has led to an increase in imports of textile and clothing, since annual textile requirement of the country is around 330 million meters but the production is just 50 million meters.
Textile imports during the first 11 months of the current fiscal stood at Rs. 606.21 million, which is nearly double than that of in the same period of previous year.
