Silk industry suffers from impact of economic crisis

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, from January to May, China's silk output reached 65,723 tons, down 6 percent year-on-year of which raw silk production was 50,233 tons, down 10.51 percent year-on-year.

Silk fabric output was 375,880,000 meters, an increase of 21.94 percent. According to statistics collected from 3,520 silk enterprises for the period January-May in 2009, China's silk industry realized an industrial output value of 60.84 billion Yuan, an increase of 5.04 percent.

Profits from the sector reached 1.37 billion Yuan, a reduction of 2.50 percent year-on-year. Product manufacturing sector and silk knit sector realized slight increase in profits, silk weaving and processing sector were basically flat with the same period last year and silk reeling, weaving, printing and dyeing sectors dropped about 10 percent in profits.
