Exports of un-processed wool to China touch record levels

Wool exports from South Africa, which enjoys the position as the world's second largest apparel wool exporter to China, increased its exports to record levels during the 2008-09 wool season, informed industry trade body officials.
The export of unprocessed wool to China reached 21.2 million kg in 2008-09 from 14 million kg in previous year, while the export of partly processed wool had slipped to 27.2 million kg from 29.4 million kg in the year 2007-08, stated Cape Wools.
The total wool exports to China amounted to 622.7 million rand, which slightly fell down in the 2008-09 wool season on account of lower wool prices.
Unprocessed wool is the key product that South Africa exports to China. It also exports small amount of scoured wool and wool tops to this Asian Country.
Cape Wools said that the global economic meltdown that caused slowdown in retail demands of clothing impacted wool exports to other countries too, such as the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy and India.
