A state run- textile mill, “State Company for Textile Industries”, based in Hilla, south of Baghdad, has won a multi-billion dinar contract to supply 600,000 army uniforms to the armed forces, which was imported from overseas markets in earlier years.

The textile mill which has two plants was set up in 1967 and is considered to be one of the biggest amongst Middle-East countries. The contract for supplying uniforms is worth more than 20 billion dinars (US $20 million).

The state owned textile mill, has also received another 11 billion dinar contract from the Ministry of Interior to manufacture more than 400,000 uniforms for its forces. It produces cotton and cotton/polyester blended fabrics in one plant and velvet upholstery in another.

The mill was not the least bit affected during the turmoil in Iraq in the last few years and its machineries and equipment are intact. Now it plans to add 150 more technologically advanced machines to its already existing set-up.
