equity with Indian apparel companies.

The Minister's main objective in this upcoming trade show will be to showcase the product range and manufacturing capacities of some leading Indian suppliers and explore possibilities of mutual cooperation in long term business prospects.

Mr. Maran had earlier held the portfolio of Minister of Communications and Information Technology from 2004 – 2007,during which time he had instigated several initiatives for drastically reducing mobile and landline call rates like 'One India, One Rate' and for promoting investments in Telecom and IT sectors.

Since taking office in June 2009 as the Textiles Minister his aim has been to:
- Achieve a growth rate of 8 – 10% per annum for the Indian Textiles industry (currently worth US$52 billion – made up of US$21 billion in exports and US$31 billion domestic market).
- Invite substantial Foreign Direct Investment in Textile and Clothing sector in India.
- Focus on growth in Technical Textiles and value added textile and clothing products.

The new Government is committed to transform what is considered an emerging or 'sunrise' sector into a developed industry. The Brand India Fashion, Interiors & Textiles trade fair will take place in Melbourne on 12 & 13 November and Sydney on 16 & 17 November 2009 at the Exhibition and Convention Centre.
