Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP from Mangalore recently inaugurated the North East Crafts Fair, a traditional craft expo for the ordinary lot of the North-Eastern region of India, at Hotel Woodlands, Mangalore.
Funding for the exhibition arranged by the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Limited flowed from the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) of the Ministry of Textiles of the Government of India.
Handicrafts Marketing and Service Extension Centre Assistant Director Shashidhar, while conversing with the press said that, a wide range of crafts and creations prepared by artisans from North-Eastern states including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim will be showcased at the expo.
Cane crafts, bamboo crafts, handloom weaving, artistic textile weaving, wood carving, embroidery, jewellery, brass items, basketry, hand woven fabrics, symbolic ornamentation of Assam, tribal ornaments carved out of cane and bamboo, glass beads, carpets, toys, Manipur's Kauna grass cushions, Endi silk weaving and pine apple fibre articles of Meghalaya, Mizoram's bamboo cap and a number of such items will be presented at the fair, he said.
The fair is open for public till August 8, 2010 between 10 am to 9 pm. Besides exhibiting and vending craft items, some of the renowned artisans will also be showcasing their skills and craftsmanship at the expo, he added.
