A proposal to establish textile museum, showcasing the history of Mumbai's textile mills has been approved by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's Improvement Committee. The museum will be developed in Central Mumbai.

It will be established in the premises of India United Mills in Lower Parel within two years, over an area of 61,000 square metres. The museum will comprise of a gallery displaying traditional textiles and fabrics that were once worn in Mumbai several years ago, during the British era.

As per estimates, setting up of the museum will cost Rs 1.28 billion, of which Rs 2 million will be provided by the central government. The museum will display cotton spinning and fabric making processes and it will also describe use of various machineries and looms.

Moreover, it will also portray the social life of mill workers, who spent a colourful life in the city, showcasing the chawl culture and the celebration of Ganesh Chathurthi, as these had their roots embedded in the city's mill life.
