New EPA Chemical Plan acknowledges textile rental's green progress

Initially, TRSA members embarked on an aggressive effort to virtually eliminate the use of detergents containing NPE by 2015. The recently announced agreement with EPA calls for NPE's elimination from all liquid detergent formulations by December 31, 2013 and all powders one year later.

Over the last five years, the industry's NPE use has declined by approximately 75 percent. That trend is accelerating, as TRSA's most recent data show that only about 34 percent of liquid detergent sales to the industry contain NPE (and 41 percent of powder detergent sales).

“This progress has been achieved thanks to an aggressive effort by chemical suppliers to reformulate the dozens of detergent products used by the industry,” explained Potack, of Unitex Textile Rental Services, Mount Vernon, N.Y. “This reformulation continues in earnest. We feel the phase-out timetable is realistic and look forward to continuing our partnership with EPA throughout the development process.”
