Handicraft Board to train artisans in Sarawak craft

In order to expand the exclusivity of local craftwork of Sarawak and to preserve it from extinction, the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation will train more artisans on this art.

As revealed by Salmi Mohd Isa, the Corporation's craft conservation officer, at present there are just three craftsmen - Dayang Norsalam Pengiran Parsih, an expert of Rejang songket art, Banggie anak Embol who specializes in pua weaving and Andah anak Lembang an Iban pottery expert.

She said that, the Sarawak embraces within, many arts that are unique and have potential for development, and thus they need more artisans who know the art.

These craftsmen she said, while helping the domestic craft industry to grow, would also facilitate training the entrepreneurs who might be interested in the industry.

She further stated that, programmes for promotion of local handicraft were even being conducted in schools and advanced learning institutes.

She also added by saying that, they possess an incubator in Kuching and the same can be used as training centre and where such local handicraft works could be produced, she added.
