Disruption in gas supplies to textile sector

Annual maintenance at major gas fields in the country has halted gas supply to various textile industries for five days. The Qadirpur gas field has ceased its operations for 'an annual turnaround' due to which the textile factories went without gas from September 13 to 17.

Several textile units, are using gas as feedstock in an attempt to generate electricity power on their own to ensure uninterrupted pwer supply and this gas supply disruption has brought their units to a halt .

The textile sector consumes around 240 MMCFD of gas to generate power through Captive Power Plants, and the number of textile mills which are now dependent on state supplied power, has come down to just around 100.

Such disruption in gas supply for five days required the millers to either close down their units or to arrange for some other source of energy. However, this is believed to have further boosted their operational costs.
