Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Textiles inaugurates Hast Kriti

Thiru. Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Textiles inaugurated “Hast Kriti” – an exhibition of exclusive products of National Awardees, Shilp Gurus and Sant Kabir Awardees, as a part of Master Creation an event of the Ministry of Textiles for promotion of crafts of National Awardees at Dilli Haat.

This event is being organized by the Ministry to coincide with the Commonwealth Games so that people from all walks of life, particularly the youth of India and foreign visitors get to see the exquisite handlooms and handicrafts of the country which are an intrinsic part of our cultural heritage. Tmt. Panabaaka Lakshmi, Minister of State for Textiles, Tmt. Rita Menon, Secretary (Textiles) and senior officers of the Ministry were also present on the occasion.

While addressing on the occasion, Thiru. Maran stated that his Ministry is working for the promotion of the development of handicrafts and handloom sector in order to ensure that craftspersons and weavers, who are the examples of living traditions, are provided opportunities in showcasing their creations at appropriate platforms. Keeping this in view, he said that Ministry organises various marketing events every year at metro cities as well as other places having marketing potential.

During 2009-10, a total of 252 domestic marketing events such as Gandhi Shilp Bazaars, Crafts Bazaars, Sourcing Shows and Exhibitions were organised in the country benefiting over 24,000 artisans and generating sales of over Rs. 92 crore. In 2010-11, the Ministry has fixed up a target of 260 such events with sales of about Rs.110 crore. He hoped that , Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) will achieve this target.

Textiles Minister said that the thrust of the Government has been to empower the sector to enable them to export their produce. The handicrafts exports went up from Rs. 10,892 crore in 2008-09 by 3.05% to Rs. 11,224 crore in 2009-10. The exports showed a spectacular recovery with a growth of 16.97% to Rs. 3,548 crore during the 1st four months of 2010-11 (i.e. April to July) over that in the same period of last year, the Thiru. Maran added.

Textiles Minister stated that his Ministry every year facilitates crafts persons from Handicrafts & Handlooms side by recognizing their with National Awards . He also stressed that Master Creation brings the best from the country as it provides a platform where the best of crafts of the National Awardees , Shilp Gurus and Sant Kabir Awardees are displayed.

In her address Tmt Panabaaka Lakshmi , Minister of State for Textiles highlighted the efforts taken by the Ministry in promoting handicrafts & handlooms and welfare of artisans , weavers and crafts persons.

On the occasion, both Ministers also distributed awards to Master craft persons, weavers and artisans.
