PET recycling posts staggering growth

China's PET recycling industry has realized a staggering speed in development in recent years. Its production will reach seven million tons by the end of 2010. China's recycled polyester staple fiber production already accounts for 80 percent of the world's total capacity.

China's current annual output of recycled polyester staple fiber is 80,000 tons; 95 percent of waste materials are imported from more than 20 countries and 80 percent of the products are earmarked for exports.

However, an embarrassing fact is that the operation rate of China's recycling polyester industry is only about 50 percent, highlighting the phenomenon of idle capacity.

Currently, recycled polyester production is concentrated in eastern coastal areas, of which, Jiangsu and Zhejiang province, account for more than 70 percent of national capacity.

China has six enterprises each with a production capacity over 80,000 tons per year and 14 enterprises each with production capacity over 50,000 tons.

With the expansion of production capacity, the contradiction between raw materials supply and demand of domestic renewable polyester industry is growing.
