Textile & apparel exports clock excellent growth

During the first eight months of this year, textile and apparel exports of Peru to Latin America, except Venezuela, showed 16 percent growth, according to the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL).

CCL cited such a growth as a significant improvement against 2.5 percent plunge in international exports during the same period. Compared to the slow revitalization of the global economy, the apparel and textile companies of Peru have acquired a good niche market in Latin America.

Accounting for 20 percent of country's overall exports, Latin America stands as a key export market for Peruvian small and medium sized companies.

On account of issues regarding the serving of certificates, that facilitate exporters to sale products in a particular country, Peruvian textiles and garments could not find a market in Venezuela.

Textile and apparel exports of the country showed an average one percent growth each month, between September 2009 and August 2010. However, this growth was less than the increase in non-traditional exports, which increased by average 2.3 percent during the same period.

According to the CCL, these are the indications that the textile and apparel sector has started recovering from the global economic crisis.
