There has been a strong surge of 58.55 percent in country's handicraft exports which has gone up from $26.32 million in October 2009 to $41.73 million in October this year, the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) data revealed.
This rise in exports is mainly because of the rising demand in US and European markets.
The products which registered highest export growth include imitation jewellery which grew by 37.94 percent, woodware by 33.20 percent and shawls as artware by 30.13 percent growth rate.
Because of a positive response from the conventional markets, and even from new markets like Latin America and Africa, the sector is positive on achieving the export target of $2.2 billion laid by the government for the current financial year.
In the initial seven months of current fiscal itself the sector's exports grew by 23.91 percent to one billion dollar.
Of the country's total exports of handicraft items, 70 percent is towards US and EU.
Jaipur, Jodhpur, Saharanpur and Moradabad are the main centres for handicrafts in the country which even source overseas markets. There are around 10 lakh people in the country who earn their livelihood while working in the sector.
