Sri Lanka intends to set up 1,000 handicraft villages

The Sri Lankan government, with a view to boost the country's economic development, is going llklkkto establish 1,000 handicraft villages by extending infrastructure facilities, Prime Minister DM Jayaratne said.

He revealed the information while speaking at the 'Shilpa' National Awards Ceremony for Handicrafts held at the Janakala Kendraya, Battaramulla. The National Crafts Council organized the function in association with the Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Ministry.

He said that, setting up such villages in all the districts of the country would help in social and economic development of the nation. Formerly also, due importance was given to handicrafts to encourage the inherent talents and abilities of the inhabitants. He further said that, it is essential to develop the talents of young citizens and that award ceremonies like this are meant to uplift the spirits of those engaged in the job.

Douglas Devananda – the Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Minister, said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has restated that, national level importance should be attached to the country's handicraft industry.

Also, as stated by the Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Deputy Minister Weerakumara Dissanayaka, a huge sum has been allocated for small enterprises under the 2011 Budget.
