Cotton area expected to rise in 2011-12

According to November national survey by Cotton Market Monitoring System, 2011-12 national cotton area is expected to be 80.795 million Mu (one hectare = 15 Chinese Mu), an increase of 5.113 million Mu, or up 6.8 percent, when compared with 2010 and the increase is less than previous market expectation.

Of this, cotton area in the Yellow River reaches will increase by 7.7 percent year on year, cotton area in the Yangtze River reaches will grow 6.7 percent year on year, while cotton area in Xinjiang Autonomous Region will rise by 5.1 percent year on year.

In addition, as of December 24, seed cotton price was 5.83 Yuan/kg, up 73 percent over the same time of previous year, the average cost of lint acquisition was 24,784 Yuan/ton (not including processing costs), up 84.8 percent year on year, cotton traders were strongly reluctant to sell cotton.

China's 2010/11 cotton consumption has been cut by 56,000 tons to 10.365 million tons, and 2011/12 cotton consumption has been fixed at 10.524 million tons.
