The Karur Weaving and Knitting Units Association and the Federation of Textile Producers Association announced a two-day strike to protest the soaring yarn prices, following which a majority of the weaving and handloom units in Karur had shut their shops on Monday.
P Nallasamy, President of the Karur Weaving and Knitting Units Association in a statement said that, around 200 weaving and knitting units in the region employed thousands of workers, and thus served as a source of livelihood for these workers and their families.
But then he stated that, the abrupt increase in the yarn prices over the last few months has badly hit their businesses.
He therefore, appealed the State and the Central Governments to initiate necessary measures on immediate basis, so as to curtail the rising yarn prices.
He even requested the governments to interfere in the matter to reinstate normalcy in the market and to redevelop trust amongst the entrepreneurs.
