S. Ramamoorthy, Regional Director (southern region), Office of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) recently stated that, a handicraft items marketing hub is likely to be set up in Mylapore. A proposal in this respect has already been drafted and is pending for government approval, he added.

The official said this while speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony of a handicraft 19-day expo, 'Gandhi Shilp Bazaar'at Valluvar Kottam.

The Tamilnadu Handicrafts Development Corporation is presently deliberating on project proposals like setting up a museum in the Poompuhar showroom and an Urban Haat in Mamallapuram, which are mainly aimed at boosting handicrafts.

He said that, the artisans exhibiting their goods at the expo, represent a big chunk of all those who exert hard in villages all day long.

He further added that, they have helped them to constitute self-help groups, and have urged the non-governmental agencies to generate more awareness amongst the artisans regarding the government projects. NGOs could better help in explaining the significance of the insurance and healthcare schemes to these artisans, he added.

Chairman of the Tamilnadu Handicrafts Development Corporation R. Vijaykumar inaugurated the exhibition, in which around 150 participants from diverse parts of the country are participating.
