An innovator from Assam has invented a extra-weft insertion technique for handlooms named – Chanekee.
Deepak Bharali unveiled this new equipment at a five day training programme for Manipuri weavers.
The Chanekee device costs around Rs. 6,000-7,000. Nearly 15 weavers, including one male, from three districts of Manipur attended the training programme at the venue where 10 Chanekee devices have been installed to impart training.
The new device Chanekee cuts the time required for making the designs to almost one-third of the time taken by the conventional method of making designs.
The insertion of weft threads which is essential for preparation of various designs is conventionally done by hand by tying knots, is a cumbersome process.
