Govt spends over P8m on uniforms, safety & protective clothing

The Government of Botswana has been spending an annual average of P8, 6 million on uniforms, safety and protective clothing in the past five years, says the Assistant Minister of Finance and Development Planning Duncan Mlazie.

Mlazie said out of this amount 80 per cent was supplied by the local textile industry. In line with government policy of promoting the use of locally manufactured goods and services, the ministry continues to source its supplies on uniforms, safety and protective clothing from local textile industries to the extent that they can be supplied by the local textile industry, Mlazie told parliament.

He said that there are instances where items such as shoes have to be procured outside the country. He added that in line with this policy, the current tender, amounting to P 8,9 million was wholly awarded to local textile industries. Mlazie was responding to a question from MP for Selebi Phikwe East Kavis.

Kario who had asked for appraisal on the average annual government expenditure on uniforms, safety and protective clothing.

Kario had also wanted to know what proposition of this amount was supplied by the local textile industry, and in view of the growth of the local textile industry, what the ministry was doing to achieve a total supply by the local textile industry.
