TSHK to present events on April 3 & 27, May 10th

Textile Society of Hong Kong announces events as follows: talk by Chris Buckley "Tibetan textiles, old and new " on Mon April 3, Thurs April 27- A Talk by Lizette Smook "The Fashion Industry – Behind the Scenes ", Wed May 10- A Talk by Gina Corrigan "The Miao Minority: Tradition and Change and on Monday April 3: "Tibetan textiles, old and new" A talk by Chris Buckley
Weaving used to play a major part in Tibetan life prior to 1950, when Tibetans used their abundant supplies of wool to make striking carpets and flatweaves for their own use. In this talk Chris will show us examples of the main types of Tibetan textiles and photographs of the weaving processes.
He will also compare older production with present-day weaving, and talk about some of the challenges that weavers face in Tibet, especially the question of why, despite the popularity of their carpets, the survival of the weaving tradition within Tibet is under threat.
We are very pleased to introduce this talk by the well-known Beijing writer and Tibet specialist, Chris Buckley. Chris may be known to you as the owner of Torana Galleries in Beijing and Shanghai and as the author of Tibetan Furniture, the first complete guide to the subject.
In this talk for the TSHK, he will introduce us to Tibetan textiles, both carpet and flatweave. Copies of the book will be available for sale at a special price.
