Having pioneered and guided the Turkish clothing industry for over 30 years, Turkish Clothing Manufacturers Association (TCMA) presented in 2002 a project titled, Horizon 2010, the Global Repositioning of the Turkish Clothing Industry.

The last five years since then, proved the accuracy of the observations made in the study, and the Board decided to revise it in 5 year periods. The study consists of four parts.

The first part is on the recent improvements in the industry. It states that the production has decreased in amount; the production in big cities is not sustainable, especially so with the great burden of public costs, there is need for flexible small party production. As for the foreign trade matters, the report depicts that the average unit price of the exported goods are increasing, which is a sign of more value added production.

Deep insight of the industry shows that the orders are transforming into smaller amounts, brand building is accelerating and the retail market is growing rapidly. The companies consolidating as the profit margins narrow.

The second part of the study concentrates on the developments in the global clothing industry. It states that China was supplying about 27% of the world's total imports, at the end of year 2005.

HORIZON 2015 presents various global scenarios and projections for the Turkish clothing industry. According to the competitive scenario, Turkey's share in the world apparel trade will remain around 5%, whereas the optimistic scenario envisages around 1% growth in this share by 2015.

The project main aim is to transform from being a supplier to a market maker status in the global industry. As an extension, the competition will no longer be on cost vs. price, but instead price vs. quality.

It also envisages that Istanbul becomes a regional fashion center, whereas manufacturing infrastructure is to be transferred to the clusters.
