The first quarter of current fiscal 2007-08 seems to be good for Bangladeshi exporters as they have so far earned US $6.2 million by exploring and exporting to new markets in 21 countries, according to statistics recently released by Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) of Bangladesh.

It is considered a great achievement on the part of businessmen as earlier, exports to these nations were nil.

Bangladeshi enterprises endeavoured to explore opportunities in countries like Angola, Cambodia, Iceland, Ivory Coast, Kyrgyzstan, Lithunia, Namibia, Niger, Tajikistan, Tanzania and Uzbekistan.

In the period from July to September 2007-08, the country mainly exported woven and knitwear garments, leather items, raw as well as finished jute goods, along with chemical products.

The EPB data reveals that, in last fiscal year which ended in June 2007, Bangladesh's total exports were $12.1 billion. Out of this, nearly 76 percent earnings came through apparels, with US and European nations being major destinations.

Market experts believe that there is further scope for entrepreneurs to boost their foreign earnings as many South American countries still remained unexplored.
