Apparel & clothing articles exports decline in Q2 - CSO

Central Statistics Office (CSO) of Mauritius conducts a "Quarterly Survey of Employment" among the EPZ and Pioneer Status Enterprises to provide up-to-date data on the evolution of the workforce in the different industry sub-groups. This issue of the “Economic and Social Indicators” presents the results of the survey carried out at the end of June 2005.

The number of enterprises at the end of the 2nd quarter 2005 stood at 498 compared to 499 at the end of March 2005 and 497 a year ago.

During the second quarter, 3 enterprises closed down and 2 new ones came into operation resulting in a net loss of one enterprise. In “Wearing apparel”, the most important group in the EPZ, two enterprises closed down bringing the number of enterprises to 219 compared to 221 at the end of the previous quarter.

The “Wearing apparel” group registered a decrease of 302 in its workforce from 52,027 at the end of the previous quarter to 51,725. Within the group, employment declined by 274 in “Pullovers” and by 28 in “Other garments”. On the other hand, the “Textiles yarn and fabrics” group registered an increase of 230 jobs.

Exports and Imports, 1st Semester 2005
Statistics on imports and exports are compiled from declarations lodged at Customs by importers and exporters. Some of these declarations are, at times, revised at a later period and corrections made accordingly on the computerised database of the Customs Department. Thus while figures for 2003 are final, those for the year 2004 and the first two quarters of 2005 are subject to revision as and when the Customs Department submits latest amendments to the Central Statistics Office.
