Authentic, traceable and environmentally sound. That's one of the core messages the Australian cotton industry will be showcasing at their bi-annual conference, to be held from August 10th to 12th on the Gold Coast.

And according to Cotton Australia CEO Adam Kay, it was a message he believed would resonate with brand-owners and consumers to stimulate demand for 100% Australian fibre.

“Australian cotton producers have been making major environmental and social inroads via our 'Best Management Practice' programme for the last decade.

“On Farm pesticide use-age has fallen by 85 per cent since the mid 1990's, and independent studies suggest our water footprint is now less than 52pc of the world average.

“Additionally, desktop studies undertaken in 2009 for the UK Carbon Trust showed Australian cotton production had the lowest carbon footprint in terms of 'on farm emissions' of any of the major producers in the world.”

Mr Kay said the BMP program set out guidelines for retaining healthy soils, using less water, creating safe workplaces and protecting native vegetation.

BMP farms were audited to ensure compliance, and a certification process had been established to ensure the authenticity of Australian BMP cotton shipments.

Mr Kay said Japanese retailer Izumiya had embraced the concept of 100pc BMP cotton in their Good-i brand, and work was currently underway to combine the BMP message with high quality traits of new Australian seed varieties in a high quality eco-branded product.

“The Australian industry has been running yarn, fabric and garment trials with some of our ultra high quality seed varieties. When combined with BMP, this produces a highly marketable, completely authentic product.”

Mr Kay said the Australian Cotton Conference was the ideal venue for prospective customers to explore the opportunities available first hand.
