UTSA's 73rd annual convention draws nearly 250 industry operators and suppliers to Los Cabos, Mexico.
Highlights of the annual event included a presentation of UTSA's highest honor, the Gus Eggerling Award, to retiring G&K Chairman Dick Fink.
As UTSA Chairman in 1997-98, Fink led the charge against proposed federal rules specifically governing their wastewater discharges. Sewage treatment plants already had the authority to regulate industrial wastewater under the National Pretreatment Program.
If passed as written, these scientifically flawed "categorical standards" or "effluent guidelines" would have cost their industry hundreds of millions with no additional benefit to the environment.
Also recognized at the convention was David Bubes of Linens of the Week (LOTW).
Bubes was named "Honorary Member" for a lifetime of contributions to the industry and association.
Bubes had served four years as UTSA vice chairman and was due to become chairman in 1982, but was unable to assume the post as his company, Carter Industrial Laundry, became part of UniFirst and he left the industry.
With his family, he returned to the business with the purchase of Washington-based LOTW in 1985.
In addition to his business leadership skills, Bubes was a pioneer of industry technologies including wastewater treatment and synthetic fabrics.
The James Biggie Award for outstanding supplier service went to Jeff Frushtick of Leonard Automatics for his long history of industry support, including his contributions to Plant Operations and educational institute programming.
