Qatar Petroleum partners CTCI to boost ethylene output

Qatar Petroleum Company (QAPCO) plans to increase its ethylene production capacity through a two phase project, and it has already entered into a contract with Taiwanese firm, CTCI Corporation, for the first phase.
The first phase of the project involving a cost of QR 604 million would ensure installation of new ethylene storage tank and furnaces incorporating state-of-the-art technology.
Meanwhile, the second phase, which is still under review and awaiting approval from QAPCO Board, is aimed at enhancing the firm's annual ethylene production capacity to 950,000 to 1,000,000 MT. The estimated cost for the second phase has been pegged at two billion QR and is likely to kick off in first quarter of 2013.
Besides enhancing productivity, the first phase would also see revamping of QAPCO plant machineries to ensure adherence to world safety and environment norms and to reduce the flow of environment damaging effluents.
Following its standard process of deciding on the basis of inviting tenders, QAPCO bestowed the first phase contract on CTCI Corporation, along with an additional optional requirement of QR 176 million, thus taking the overall first phase cost to QR 780 million.
The contract for first phase of operations was recently signed by Dr. Mohammed Yousef Al Mulla, QAPCO Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, and CTCI Chairman John T Yu and IHI Vice President for Plant Engineering Operations, Nitta Masami.
The project would see use of latest techniques in effluent control, combustion and online monitoring. This would result in considerable reduction in emission of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and reprocessing of coke inside the furnaces, which would prevent environmental contamination.
Also, it would enhance the fuel consumption-efficiency ratio and boost productivity, which is looked upon as a major breakthrough in achieving ecologically sustainable growth, the officials said.
The new technique would prove very effective in shielding the environment and upholding safety norms at Mesaieed Industrial City, they added.
