Texhong to set up US$ 250mn viscose plant in Uruguay

Chinese textile group Texhong is planning to set up a new US$ 250 million textile factory, for the production of viscose yarn, in the southern region of San Jose Department in Uruguay.

The textile company has acquired 160 hectares land in San Jose and is awaiting authorization from Uruguay’s National Environmental Management Agency (DINAMA) to begin construction, reports Uruguayan newspaper El Pais.

The director general of the Administration of Municipality of San Jose Department, Francisco Zunino, said the company will begin the construction process soon and is already consulting an architectural firm for designing the factory.

The local administration is collaborating with the company and is negotiating with the UTE, Uruguay’s state-owned power company, as the factory will have high energy requirements, he added.

Mr. Zunino said the construction would take place in three stages and the first stage would include building of a 40,000 sq m warehouse at an estimated cost of around US$ 80 million.

The director general stated that on completion of the construction, the factory is estimated to employ nearly 600 people.
