Sasol declares Honorary Doctorate for Pieter Cox

Sasol is delighted to announce that its Chairman, Mr Pieter Cox, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

This follows the awarding to Mr Cox earlier this year of an Honorary Doctorate by the University of the Free State in South Africa.

During his nine-year tenure as Chief Executive of Sasol, which ended on 30 June 2005, the market capitalisation value of Sasol increased four-fold from R30 billion to over R120 billion. During this period, Mr Cox placed high emphasis on the advancement of Sasol's world-leading proprietary technology.

He established relationships with selected universities in various parts of the world to support the Group's substantial research and development resources and facilities in South Africa.

This foresight resulted in Sasol being positioned to commercialize its technology offshore as evidenced by the recent inauguration of the world's largest gas-to-liquid (GTL) plant in Qatar in a joint venture between Sasol and Qatar Petroleum, with further major investments in this and other locations likely to follow.

Sasol has also previously announced that it is far-advanced in negotiations potentially to construct coal-to-liquid ((CTL) facilities in China, also utilizing its technology.

Deputy Chief Executive of Sasol, Trevor Munday, said: “This is much-deserved recognition for our Chairman. His vision during the years he was Chief Executive and his focus on developing our technology has poised Sasol for a new growth era internationally that fittingly will follow the incredible growth of the Group during his leadership.”
