The Guardian Building recently gained a new tenant. City Knits, Detroit's specialty yarn and knitting store centered in the Fisher Building, has expanded to include a downtown location.
Luxurious yarn and accessories offering company City Knits' new downtown store, located in the lobby of the Guardian Building, opened last month. City Knits' owner Karen Kendrick-Hands says that she wanted to make it easier for her downtown customers to get their yarn on their lunch-break, or before or after work.
“We want to be the local yarn shop for all the knitters downtown, to build that relationship between our customers,” says Kendrick-Hands.
To accommodate the downtown office crowd, City Knits is also offering lunchtime knitting and crocheting lessons, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays; a half-hour lesson is $5. Other new programs for the downtown location include a weekly knitting session to take place Tuesday nights on the People Mover at 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., when the assembled knitters will decide on a nearby restaurant to dine at.
Kendrick-Hands calls the Guardian Building store, which is around 140-square-feet, a satellite of the main, more spacious Fisher Building store. Downtown customers who want yarn from the main store will also be able to arrange for a 24-hour pickup service between the two locations.
