Carpet and flooring cover giant, Shaw Industries, recently announced that it will shut down its Ben Hill County, Fitzgerald plant within next two months. This unit chiefly spins the nylon.
Shaw, manufacturing rugs and carpets since 1946, is the largest employer in the county. This closure will leave around 500 workers jobless.
Company closed its Tifton facility in August 2006, which left 89 people unemployed.
Sources say that the current sluggish housing market, especially in the carpet category, has forced Shaw to take this step.
