Vietnam textile sector expects 15% rise in 2013: VITAS

Vietnam’s textile and apparel exports are expected to grow by 15 percent during 2013, according to the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS).

Vietnamese textile & apparel sector witnessed a rise of 32 percent in exports during 2005-11. Last year, the country’s textile and clothing exports earned US$ 17.15 billion, registering an increase of 8.5 percent year-on-year.

Speaking to fibre2fashion, vice-chairman of VITAS, Ms. Dung Dang said, “We are expecting 10-15 percent growth in textile and garment exports by the end of 2013.”

“Though, we are facing several challenges due to the ongoing world economic crisis and domestic issues in the textile and clothing sector, we are confident that we can overcome these difficulties and challenges,” she opines.

According to her, Vietnam is a country with strong labor laws, fair wages and a healthy textile and apparel industry. “Our Government and the industry have tried best to raise awareness among the small and medium enterprises to have sustainable development and to make them understand the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR),” she informs.

“The recent incidents in Bangladesh are good examples showcasing the necessity of CSR for long-term development,” she mentions.

Vietnamese textile and garment exports showed a sharp increase of 28.4 percent year-on-year and rose to US$ 1.05 billion in January 2013.

The Ministry of Textile and Trade aims to achieve around US$ 19 billion from textile and garment exports by 2013.
