Eight easy ways to save money while shopping online, GSI

GSI Commerce Inc revealed a series of recommendations to help consumers obtain the best deals while shopping online this holiday season. Given the current economic climate, shoppers will try and stretch their dollars further by finding great deals this year.

GSI has drawn on years of experience supporting the e-commerce operations for top-name retailers like Toys “R” Us Inc., Dick's Sporting Goods Inc., Bath and Body Works, Aéropostale Inc, Levi's, the National Football League (NFL), and Ace Hardware to develop these tips.

“As a result of the current economic conditions, there are even better deals being offered online this year that can help consumers save money this holiday season,” said Fiona Dias, executive vice president, Partner Strategy and Marketing for GSI. “From joining retailer e-mail lists to checking for deals the entire week of Thanksgiving, consumers can leverage the convenience of shopping online while taking advantage of many unique deal-hunting opportunities.”

The following are GSI's tips and tricks for 2008:

• Sign up and Save: Simply put, the most effective and easiest way to find the best deals is to be in the know and join retailers' e-mail lists now. E-mail is the preferred tool of marketers and often the best seasonal promotions, offers and coupons are found through e-mail. Many retailers will let you share these offers with your friends and family members. Take advantage of these and send to everyone you know. Then ask them to send their offers to you.

• Don't Get “Cutoff” by Shipping Deadlines: Shop now to avoid missing important shipping deadlines. This especially pertains to military and economy shipping. For delivery by Christmas Eve, the military (APO/FPO) cutoff date will likely be the first week of December for most e-commerce retailers. Look for retailers offering free and reduced shipping. If you do get “cutoff,” find online retailers that will enable you to order and pick up in store as late as December 24.

• Look for Going Out of Business Sales: With retailers going out of business, start shopping at their Web stores. You'll find once-in-a-lifetime deals as these merchants sell their entire inventories.

• Shop Midday or Midnight: Online retailers are offering special savings throughout the day. Check out your favorite sites for “Deal of Day,” Lunch Specials and Midnight Madness sales. Another great time to shop online is when stores are shut, such as Thanksgiving Day.

• Start Early: If you wait to start shopping on Black Friday (traditional start of the retail holiday shopping season) or Cyber Monday (traditional start of the online retail holiday shopping season), you might miss out on some great offers. Look for what your favorite retailers are offering the entire week of Thanksgiving. “Door-buster sales” aren't just located in-store anymore; retailers are moving their once-a-year deals online starting as early as the Monday before Thanksgiving. Also look for unadvertised deals online on Thanksgiving Day.
