We combine contemporary designs with traditional craftsmanship
Inspired by the love of consumers towards local handicrafts as well as the functionality of bags in this active, bohemian, solo, and nomadic lifestyle, Zouk aims to support and encourage good Indian craftsmanship and handicrafts, to keep India's culture alive for future generations and combine them with modern functionality. The husband-and-wife duo Disha Singh and Pradeep Krishnakumar, Co-founders of Zouk, speak to Fibre2Fashion about promoting local craftsmanship of India, supporting artisans, their D2C brand and its future plans.

How can we raise awareness about the importance of handlooms and handicrafts in preserving cultural heritage and supporting local economies?

This can be achieved through several strategies. Social media campaigns can be created to showcase the beauty and cultural significance of these traditional crafts. Workshops and events can be organised to educate people about handlooms and handicrafts while partnering with NGOs, and community organisations can provide valuable insights and resources. Providing incentives for local artisans and launching awareness campaigns in collaboration with local government bodies and educational institutions can also promote the use of traditional crafts and support local economies. These strategies can help in preserving traditional crafts and the livelihoods of local artisans.

What are some of the most significant challenges faced by artisans in the modern era, and how can the government and various organisations help address these issues?

As a brand that values traditional craftsmanship and supports local artisans, Zouk recognises the challenges faced by artisans in the modern era. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of access to markets and distribution channels, which limits the demand for traditional crafts. Additionally, competition from mass-produced, lower-priced products often makes it difficult for artisans to make a sustainable living. To address these issues, the government and various organisations can provide financial assistance, create marketing and distribution channels, and provide education and training to artisans to enhance their skills and knowledge. Supporting artisans in this way will help preserve traditional crafts, provide economic opportunities for communities, and promote the cultural heritage of a region.

How can technology be integrated into traditional handicrafts and handloom practices to enhance productivity and create new opportunities for artisans?

As a brand that values traditional craftsmanship while embracing innovation, Zouk recognises the potential for technology to enhance productivity and create new opportunities for artisans. Technology can be integrated into traditional handicrafts and handloom practices in several ways, such as using digital tools to design and create patterns, automating certain processes, and incorporating new materials and techniques. By embracing technology, artisans can increase productivity, reduce costs, and create innovative products that appeal to modern consumers. Additionally, the use of technology can help in promoting traditional crafts to a wider audience, allowing artisans to reach new markets and expand their businesses. By embracing technology, Zouk can help in preserving traditional crafts while creating new opportunities for artisans.

What role do you believe global tourism plays in promoting and sustaining local handicrafts and handloom industries, and how can it be further leveraged?

Zouk recognises the role that global tourism plays in promoting and sustaining local handicrafts and handloom industries. The demand for authentic, locally made products from tourists can provide a significant boost to the local economy and help in the preservation of traditional crafts. By showcasing the unique cultural heritage of a region through traditional crafts, global tourism can create a sustainable market for artisans, providing them with a source of income while preserving traditional skills and techniques. To further leverage this potential, we can partner with tourism boards and organisations to create immersive experiences that highlight the beauty and cultural significance of traditional crafts. This can include guided tours of local workshops and exhibitions, creating products that are designed specifically for tourists, and collaborating with local communities to create a sustainable model for preserving traditional crafts through tourism.

How can collaborations between artisans and designers help to create innovative, contemporary products while preserving traditional craftsmanship and skills?

By combining modern design concepts with traditional techniques, artisans, and designers can create products that appeal to contemporary tastes while preserving the cultural heritage of traditional crafts. The sharing of skills and knowledge between artisans and designers can result in the development of new techniques and materials, allowing for experimentation and innovation. Collaboration can also provide access to new markets, enabling artisans to expand their businesses and preserve traditional skills and techniques for future generations.

What inspired you to start Zouk, and how did your visit to Kutch play a role in its inception?

The idea for Zouk was born during my MBA days at IIM Ahmedabad. While on a trip to Kutch during a course at IIMA, I noticed my peers were easily attracted to local handcrafts but refused to buy them due to a lack of functionality. I had always felt passionate about doing something in the fashion and lifestyle space, and this allowed me to address the gap in the market and introduce a brand that designed bags with a combination of style and functionality, married with Indian ethos and the rich heritage of our handicrafts.

How did you identify the gap in the market for modern products with an essence of India?

As a brand that combines contemporary designs with traditional craftsmanship, we identified the gap through extensive market research. We observed that consumers were seeking products that were not only functional and stylish but also had a unique cultural identity. While several brands were offering contemporary products, there was a lack of authentic Indian products that appealed to modern tastes. By combining modern design concepts with traditional crafts, Zouk was able to create products that filled this gap in the market. We found that consumers were drawn to the uniqueness and cultural significance of our products, making us a leader in the market for modern products with an essence of India.

What challenges did you face when transforming traditional handicrafts into products that fit modern sensibilities?

Zouk faced several challenges during the transformation process. One of the biggest challenges was maintaining the authenticity of traditional crafts while making them relevant to modern consumers. We had to strike a balance between preserving traditional techniques and introducing contemporary design elements to make the products more appealing to modern tastes. Additionally, sourcing quality materials that were sustainable and affordable was also a challenge. We had to work closely with local artisans and suppliers to ensure that we were using materials that met our standards while also supporting the local economy. Despite these challenges, we were able to successfully transform traditional handicrafts into products that fit modern sensibilities, allowing us to provide consumers with unique and culturally significant products.

How do you maintain the balance between preserving traditional craftsmanship and incorporating contemporary designs in your products?

We maintain the balance between the two by working closely with artisans to understand traditional techniques and incorporating modern design elements in a way that complements traditional craftsmanship. Our team of designers is constantly experimenting with different materials, techniques, and designs to create products that reflect our vision of blending tradition with modern sensibilities. We also work closely with our artisan partners to ensure that they have the necessary resources and support to continue practicing their traditional crafts while also adapting to modern trends. By maintaining this balance, Zouk can create products that are both culturally significant and appealing to modern consumers, allowing us to showcase the beauty and heritage of traditional crafts in a modern context.

Can you share some examples of how you have adapted traditional Indian handicrafts to create unique and stylish products for Zouk?

All our products at Zouk are inspired by the rich cultural heritage of India and the need of today’s generation. Our bestseller office bags are made for the modern Indian woman in the workforce, to fit all her work essentials and the same time make her stand out with our unique designs. Our office bellies are made for women on the go, comfortable enough to make them carry out their daily work without hurting their feet, but at the same time having distinct designs to match their everyday outfits and feel beautiful wearing them.

How do you ensure sustainability and ethical production of your products, while supporting local artisans and their communities?

At Zouk, we are committed to supporting local artisans and their communities. We strongly believe in giving back to the people and places that inspire us. That is why we work closely with local artisans to bring their unique skills and talents to our products. Our robust R&D team and process are dedicated to innovation across design, prints, styles, and categories while keeping the local artisans in mind. As an online first brand, we value the feedback of our loyal customers, which has helped us improve our products and enhance our tote bags, backpacks, and wallets collection over the years. We take great pride in the endless possibilities that Indian culture offers and use it as a source of inspiration for our products. Even our meeting rooms in the office are named after our India-inspired prints. By supporting local artisans and incorporating their talents into our products, we hope to create a positive impact on their communities and showcase their rich cultural heritage to the world.

What sets your company apart from other brands that offer similar products, and how do you maintain a competitive edge in the market?

The two main standout features of Zouk are Indian designs and modern functionality. If you look around, most bags and footwear are similar in look and feel – either they are dull blacks and greys, or come in solid bright colours. They look Western and are cheap replicas of foreign brands. Overall, the market does not have options for bags, footwear, and wallets that are different yet highly functional and comfortable. I felt there was a need for a brand to stand for its Indian originality, combining design with functionality. That is when ‘Zouk’ came into the picture.

How has Zouk evolved since its inception, and what are your plans for the future growth of the company?

We always wanted to build a global consumer brand from India, with products that have an essence of India. This year, we plan to expand our products to newer countries in the US, Canada, and Europe via the online route. We have already done some bespoke orders, thanks to the word-of-mouth awareness created by our existing Indian customers. We will build on this base to make a large international business from India. We will also be expanding into newer channels of distribution and geography. To drive all this, we are massively expanding our team and hiring across all key functions. We believe that we now have the brand-market fit and it is going to be an exciting new phase for anyone who joins our Zouk family in the coming years.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of founding Zouk, and how has the company impacted the lives of the artisans you work with?

The most rewarding aspect is our customer’s 4,00,000+ happy customers and the pride of taking proudly Indian designs to today’s world. The team at Zouk has always put our customers first in everything we do from design to content, to experience. Spotting people carrying Zouk bags or wearing Zouk footwear makes all of us at Zouk proud and happy that our vision of taking India’s inspiration to today’s generation is now taking space. The artisans we work with come from various backgrounds and are used to working in very different work environments. We have attached with them to provide better working conditions, upskilled them for better pay, and make them part of this ‘Make in India’ story.

As an entrepreneur, what advice would you give to others looking to start a socially responsible business that supports local craftsmanship and traditions?

My advice for such entrepreneurs would be to research and identify the local craftsmanship, collaborate with local artisans, focus on sustainability, build a strong brand, and embrace technology. These strategies can help create a successful business that not only generates profits but also creates a positive impact on the environment and the local community.
