INVISTA sees huge demand for its Lycra in Surat

Increased use of branded stretch fibre ‘Lycra’ by synthetic fabric and garment producers based in Surat has raised the brand owner INVISTA’s optimism for the region.

Use of stretch fibre by Surat’s textile industry, engaged in production of polyester and nylon based sarees, leggings, dress materials and menswear fabrics, has increased by around 20-25 percent in recent period.

Around 70 percent, that is about 21-22 million metres of the city’s daily production of 30 million metres of synthetic textile, is polyester-based, while the rest is nylon-based. According to industry experts, the stretch fibre is being used more widely in nylon-based fabric as compared to polyester-based fabrics.

Rakesh Chaudhary, Executive Director of South Gujarat Textile Exporters’ Association (SGTEA) said the popularity for women’s and men’s wear made from stretch fibre has increased, leading to a rise in sales of such stretchable fibre over the past six months.

Surat produces fabric for menswear like sportswear and T-shirts and womenswear like dress materials and leggings, which now have increased proportion of Lycra.

Also, the fibre is being increasingly used by the knitting segment in products like lingerie, innerwear and leggings. Such increased use has driven Surat’s textile industry to associate itself with INVISTA for Lycra to ensure adequate supply and at competitive price.

Devkishan Manghani, President of Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTTA) said customers from all across the country are now increasingly demanding stretch fabrics, particularly those produced in Surat.

Andrew Evans, Managing Director, INVISTA Sales & Service India Private Limited, said while they particularly sell their fibre to textile mills, they also try to focus on the value chain from the textile mills to the buyers to deliver the value of innovation.

For the purpose, besides textile mills, they also work with other value chain members like garment producers, apparel labels, retailers and consumers.

He added that INVISTA is keen to work with the textile industry of Surat.
