Bangladesh’s Minimum Wage Board recently recommended Tk 7,100 as gross monthly minimum wage for the workers in the leather goods and footwear sector, raising the wage from existing Tk 3,652. The board also incorporated a provision of 5 per cent yearly increment on basic pay. The board was formed in September for the leather goods and footwear unit workers.

The ministry appointed Mohammad Mominul Ahsan, executive director of Landmark Footwear Limited, as employers’ representative and Mohammad Anisur Rahman, line leader of Apex Footwear Ltd, as workers’ representative to the board.

The board published the proposal along with other recommendations in Bangladesh Gazette on December 19 and sought objections and suggestions within 14 days, according to a report in an English-language daily.

The minimum monthly wages for the workers and employees of leather goods and footwear industry were last set in 2013. In its latest recommendations, the wage board incorporated six grades for workers while four grades for employees in the sector.
