The World Bank agreed to Bangladeshi Government's request of identifying ways to generate more employment opportunities in the apparel sector for women from the country's underprivileged section, as the female workers' efforts in the clothing sector play an important role in the economic growth and also reduce poverty, thereby, empowering women by raising their living standards.

Ways to empower poor and vulnerable women from deprived monga-prone areas of North-Western Bangladesh will be explored, through the proposed Northern Areas Reduction of Poverty Initiative (NARI) project worth $20 million by providing them opportunities in the ready-made garment (RMG) sector in the Export Processing Zones (EPZs).

The NARI project will take steps as per recommendations of the Poverty Assessment 2008 report such as, increasing opportunities in deprived regions by expanding connectivity with growth poles and facilitating migration and stimulating women's participation in the labor force.

In a bid to facilitate the migrating poor and vulnerable women to get familiar with the urban life and the EPZ apparel factories, this project will offer information, technical knowledge, life skills and on-the-job training, transportation, housing and other necessary support to the women.

Moreover, it will also conduct an awareness campaign for potential employers to stress their responsibilities. The training centers and transitional dormitory facilities will be included under this project, on three sites, on land adjacent to EPZs at Dhaka, Karnaphuli and Iswardi.

Around 9,000 women from the monga-prone areas will receive training under the proposed project, which will provide them opportunities for greater economic and improved security as well as support them in the transition to formal employment.
