The partnership is a perfect match as Miles is known for prioritising sustainability and responsibility in his work, said Isko in a press release.
For this capsule collection, Miles worked side by side with Isko's research & development team utilising the Isko R-TWO programme which combines a mix of reused and recycled materials. The reused cotton came from Isko's own production loss, which they continuously track and trace. This has the CCS (Content Claim Standard) certification. They combined the reused cotton with recycled polyester derived from PET bottles. Depending on the content, fabrics have the RCS (Recycled Claim Standard) certification or GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certification.
The creative direction for the collection took form with 'Light on the Land' and the whole collection was made using low impact materials and responsible finishing techniques. Miles and the Isko team carefully crafted 34 designs at the Creative Room in Italy. The styles incorporated responsible design principles which include minimal washing, removable trims made of eco-metal, natural based buttons and labels, green bar tacks and embroidered rivets.
Environmental messages were embroidered on six of the pieces, by the artist Giulio Miglietta. The garments were built to last more with usage.
After receiving a Master of Arts from St. Martin's College in London, where he studied fashion and clothing design (specialising in menswear fashion), Miles Johnson began his extensive career at Levi Strauss & Co as head designer. For 11 years Miles was responsible for Levi's Vintage Clothing (LVC) collection in Europe, Japan and the US. From his mastery of finishing and distressing clothing combined with his aptitude for both men's and women's denim, emerged stories and historical themes imbedded in each of the collections. This innovation was pivotal in the development of Levi's sales tools, point of sale installations, overall retail environment. In 2011, Miles was appointed to design director at Levi Strauss & Co. He took control of all creative direction around Levi's premium collections.
While holding the role of design director, Miles oversaw the creation and execution of such lines as Levi's Vintage Clothing (LVC), Levi’s RED and Made and Crafted. After 14 years Levi’s, Miles took his vast knowledge and experience in the fashion-design industry to Patagonia where he undertook the role of creative director. Miles was known to be extremely proud and thorough with every project, implementing seasonal concepts and product stories. In 2017 he became senior creative director of product design and development where he oversaw the work of all designers in both technical and sportswear categories, as well as the product development & textile, graphics, and colour teams comprised of 40+ designers and 40 developers. During this time Patagonia's business grew from $600 million to $1 billion, and Mile’s revolutionary leadership within the company was viewed as a driving factor. Miles' forward thinking and innovative approach led him to work as a consultant, and later as a teacher at the Royal College of Art in London.
Miles is notorious for being a responsible and environmental design specialist, with a deep understanding of the sustainable approach to design; developing and improving materials to make sure they are made in the least harmful way. Miles acts on his passion for sustainability and has established himself as a promoter and public speaker on ethical practices in clothing design, and positive, healthier manufacturing.
