The Indian footwear industry alone cannot face the challenges related to skilled workforce and the art of footwear manufacturing in India; it has to be a tripartite effort involving the government, states and industry leaders where the mission and vision have to be clear, according to Asif Merchant, managing director Catwalk Worldwide Pvt Ltd (CWPL).

In recent years, the government has been only working to encourage footwear exports and no one has heard of any initiative to stop imports by building requisite infrastructure in the country, Merchant told Fibre2Fashion in an interview.
