Cambodia's garment & textile exports, imports swell

The export of apparels and textiles from the Southeast Asian nation of Cambodia rose to US$ 3.54 billion in the initial eight months of the current year, registering a growth of 11 percent over exports worth US$ 3.19 billion made during the corresponding period of last year, according to the data released by the Ministry of Commerce.
 
The US and the EU were the main destinations for Cambodian garments and textiles. Canada, China, South Korea, Japan and some other Asian nations were other importers of clothing and textiles from the Kingdom.
 
From January to August this year, Cambodia imported raw materials for its garment and textile industry worth US$ 2.04 billion, showing a 24 percent increase over US$ 1.65 billion worth imports made during the same period in 2011, according to the Commerce Ministry data.
 
China, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and Thailand were the countries from which Cambodia imported majority of its raw material requirements for the apparel and textile sector.
 
The apparel sector is the largest income-generating industry in Cambodia and it has over 300 manufacturing units that together employ around 335,400 workers, 90 percent of whom are female.
 
In 2011, Cambodia’s garment and textile sector exported goods worth US$ 4.24 billion, a rise of 25 percent year-on-year.
