Leather industry eyes overseas markets

The government of Tanzania is on a promotional mission of leather industry to endorse all related products including livestock.

Urone Leather Craft Industry is trying to explore overseas markets for its leather products in a bid to support livestock keepers in Moshi and Arusha region, reduce poverty and improve livelihood of the community.

The company targets Europe, and particularly Germany and Canada for exports.

It deals in a number of leather products including pistol cover, sandals caps, wallets, knife pocket, key holder, safari chair, office bag, belt, briefcase, hat, ladies hand bag but produces only a few of them.

These products have a distinct look and have gained patronage from several overseas customers.

Tanzanians opt for foreign products as they feel locally made leather products are poor in quality besides being expensive compared to imported goods.

Thus domestic market has failed to promote good business due to scarcity of capital and lack of marketing ideas and the company has been unable to trade its products with distant regions.
