Canada, currently, is one of the leading footwear importing countries of Vietnamese products as the North American country annually imports goods worth $1.1-1.3 billion, growing at 30-35 percent per year, statistics from Ministry of Trade said.
In 2005, Vietnam climbed to the second largest footwear exporter position in Canada behind China, up from sixth place in 2001 as the exports turnover reached $103.9 million, accounting for 7.6 percent of Canada's footwear market share.
Key exports to the market include leather–capped
shoes, leather sandals, plastic shoes and sandals, knitting–capped shoes and waterproof shoes.
However, during the first quarter 2006, the exporting to the market saw signals of slight decline in all goods sectors.
In the period, exports turnover of knitting–capped shoes rose annually at 9.4 percent, yet lower than figures of other countries like China (43.5 percent), Indonesia (128.6 percent), Spain (51 percent), Brazil (66 percent), Malaysia (11.020 percent) and Thailand (82.9 percent).
As a result, Vietnam's rank of the goods went down to the forth place from the second one behind China, Indonesia and Italy.
In the meanwhile, the figures of leather–capped shoes showed sharp growth in the period and forecasted to develop in stability in the coming time.
Canada imports about $700–750 million worth of the goods each year, paving great opportunities for Vietnamese enterprises, industrial experts opined.
