EU's garment exports to Gulf Cooperation Council countries (GCC) which include United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait, envisaged very healthy growth for 2006 as fashion industry in this region is turing lucrative.

EU exported garments worth AED3.02 billion (€ 720 million) to GCC countries in 2005; UAE alone accounted for one-third of European fashion imports worth AED1.14 billion (€ 271 million).

UAE imported goods at AED294 million (€70 million) from Italy while imports from France, Spain and Germany were AED185 million, AED160 million and AED84 million respectively.

Last year was commendable for EU countries as garment export to GCC had been facing a long period of downward trend earlier, informed Michael Müller, Managing Director, planetfair Dubai LLC-organisers of Prestige 2006.

Middle East countries should sort out the problem of monopoly as in Dubai alone more than 21 shopping malls have 70 percent of stores selling just one brand. Because of this, customers left with limited options so they need to balance between mono-brands and multi-brands, said Reinhard E Dopfer, Managing Director, European Fashion and Textile Export Council (EFTEC).
